When you install the Sense monitor, the device will immediately start reading your electricity use. As it reads the data, it will recognize the “electricity signatures” associated with your home’s appliances. Each appliance you have in your home uses electricity in a unique way. Sense recognizes these differences and, using machine learning, eventually understands when each device is in use.

Sense has a few other views that give you a more detailed look at your use over time and by device. The Trends screen gives a breakdown of your average use by day, week, month, and year. You can also get a ratio of use by device, so in those hot summer months when you’re electricity bill goes up you’ll whether your air conditioner is to blame.

Finally, a Device screen allows you to set custom alerts by device. With simple alerts you can ask Sense to notify you when a device is turned on or off. Custom alerts notify you when a certain device is on for a specified period of time. If you have a habit of leaving the oven on for hours after you’re done cooking, this feature alone might make a Sense worth the investment.

When you order the Sense Home Energy Monitor you’ll receive the monitor, an antenna, current sensors, and a power cable out of the box. Though the installation is pretty brief, it’s a good idea to have an electrician help you. The monitor itself can live inside your electrical panel or be mounted on a wall nearby.     Installed a Sense system a month back. You have to be patient with detection and be willing to try and identify the device that is found. Sometimes this takes work. I found it great to be able to find out how much current everything in the house uses, even lights, just by watching the monitor as I turned things on and off. The “kill a watt” device can’t do that. I am in the process of installing solar, so can’t say how that works. I love the ability to see usage of a specific device once it is identified. Device detection can take months from what I have read from other users. My system has still not detected by plug in car, something Sence indicates they have implemented, but still working on. I got Sense over eGauge because of the device detection verses circuit monitoring. Plus, the very easy to use software.

    Garbage. If your power ever goes out for even a moment it can take WEEKS for Sense to come back online. It is guaranteed to be multiple trips out to the power box to switch it on and off hoping it will come back online.
    The company will tell you to do the same things over and over. Did you turn it off and turn it on enough times? Is your WiFi working? Is Bluetooth connected? Maybe it’s your mobile device. After weeks of dealing with costumer service one day it just came back on. I thought my trouble were over but storm rolled in not long after and we had a brief moment of blackout. Of course Sense went down, still down. That was weeks ago. Not going through the trouble again.
    Avoid Sense if you have the choice. Paid waaaay to much for it to be constantly offline.

    The author clearly has not used a sense and is just regurgitating the marketing. The final take is useless, ask someone that wasted money on sense.

    I think it’s disingenuous for you to write this “review” without having actually used the device. A lot of copy and paste from the product website is what I see and asone brown nosing for sure.
    Having this device and comparing real world experience to marketing claims there is a huge difference. I like Sense and plan to keep it. I’m a little embarrassed about how I’ve told everyone how great it is before I really had enough knowledge and experience to say much of anything.
    This devices biggest problem is their marketing. It does NOT do what the makers claim. It somewhat does some of it.
    It’s a great product for the right person. I encourage anyone interested to visit community.sense.com and do a bunch of reading from actual users before purchasing.
