You are eligible for the Federal ITC as long as you own your solar energy system, rather than lease it. If you sign a lease agreement, the third-party owner gets the solar tax credit associated with the system. This is also true for the vast majority of state and local incentives for solar, although in some special cases a lease will grant you the financial benefits associated with the sale of solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs).     Bill: Yes, the credit would still benefit you, since you would OWE LESS that year. If you had made the same amount of payments, then you would get a refund for your overpayment.. (But it’s not good to get a check back, you’re just giving the govt a 0% loan.)

    If I sell the house and I have already taken the tax credit, but there is still a balance on the system that the new owners will assume, can they also take a tax credit?

    I currently lease and have the option to buy. If I buy the existing panels, can I qualify for the tax credit? Or do I have to get out of the lease, have those removed, then put on new panels?
