How you can get Costco solar panels from Sunrun

If you regularly shop at Costco, you may have spotted a kiosk for home solar installations in the store, or even spoken to a store representative about installing their own branded Costco solar panels. Costco has a partnership with Sunrun, one of the largest residential solar companies in the country, to offer their members special benefits when they go solar. Here are the details of Costco’s partnership with Sunrun.

Costco solar partnership with Sunrun: benefits & takeaways

Sunrun is a California-based company that installs solar in 21 states across the country, primarily in the Northeast and Southwest. In 2017, they beat out Tesla Energy (formerly SolarCity) and installed the most residential solar systems in the United States. If you’re a Costco member, you are eligible for some special benefits if you go solar with Sunrun, including Costco cash and an enhanced roof warranty.

When you choose to buy a solar panel system through the Sunrun-Costco partnership, you’ll receive a Costco cash card worth 10 percent of your solar equipment costs (before taxes). This benefit only applies if you own your system – if you opt for a solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sunrun, you won’t receive a Costco cash card.

Based on Sunrun proposals we have reviewed from EnergySage Solar Marketplace users, equipment costs can range anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of the gross cost of the installation, so your Costco cash card benefits will vary accordingly.

For example, if your system costs $20,000 in total, your equipment costs may range from $5,000 to $10,000, which means you’d receive a Costco cash card with a value of anywhere between $500 and $1,000. (The actual costs for your project depend on many factors; to get an accurate estimate, you’ll need to talk to a company representative.)

In addition to the Costco cash card, you may be eligible for an additional cash bonus if you’re a Costco Executive Member. You’ll need to speak with a store representative to get more specific information.

Costco members who go solar with Sunrun also receive an enhanced 15-year roof penetration warranty from Sunrun. (The standard offering from Sunrun is 10 years.) This is a separate warranty from Sunrun’s workmanship warranty, which covers the installation, and a product manufacturer’s warranty, which covers your actual solar equipment.

Does Costco back Sunrun’s warranties?

No. Although Costco and Sunrun are partners in advertising solar, Costco does not back the warranties for your solar panel system – all they provide is a Costco Cash Card and access to their Costco Member Service Hotline. Though it is not immediately clear from Sunrun and Costco’s advertising materials, our research into the Sunrun customer agreement reveals that the extended roof penetration warranty offered through this partnership is provided by and fulfilled exclusively by Sunrun, not by Costco. We reached out to Costco directly for any further details, and their spokesperson declined to comment on this topic.

Should you get Costco solar panels through Sunrun?

There are some benefits to working with a national-scale solar installer over a local one – they have a recognized brand name and meaningful warranties. However, larger companies don’t always offer the best prices, and they aren’t known for personalized customer service (for more insight, read Fast Company’s “The Best Way To Get Cheap Solar: Shop Around”). Additionally, you can read our full analysis of Sunrun’s reviews across the web to get more perspective on their strengths and weaknesses.

Regardless of which installer you choose, EnergySage’s recommendation is always to compare multiple installers to find the one that’s the best fit for your needs. You can easily get quotes from installers near you by registering your property on the EnergySage Solar Marketplace. I’ve priced around and 100% LOVE solar thru Costco Sunrun. I agree that the cash price is higher, but the loan for 20 years at 1.49% with no prepayment penalties best everything else…
Great personal service, local trips, service and support in every major market.. so I feel connected and great comfort with my local sales rep ..
This seems like it’s a scam here trying to get leads by supply a tainted portrayal… Shame on you guys for misleading people… All I say it’s invite a local Costco two to dry an appointment and decide for yourself if they are friendly etc… Good luck.

Sunrun’s cash price is far lower than the financed amount. The 1.49% rate is not a true APR as they don’t factor the huge price difference between the two numbers. I got a quote from Sunrun recently with $60k as the cash price but $71k if financed. This to me appears to be very wrong. For example, when I go buy a car, I negotiate a price first to be as low as I can get it, then can decide to finance or pay cash on that negotiated price. Sunrun should not be calling that 1.49% rate as APR as the true APR is far higher once you include this huge loan price difference.

Sunrun with Costco were the most expensive proposal for my Solar Installation on gross and net syatem cost. Thousands of dollars more than the middle priced equal system proposals, eithe rwith a battery back up or without.

Yes! Sunrun is the worst company in the customer service department ever. My solar system has been out/not working at all for over a year. I have called numerous times about this problem and they schedule me for an appointment and then they reschedule and reschedule and reschedule, no one can give me an answer on what is taking them so long to repair my system. Totally pissed!

My father fell for this scam. He just refinanced his house to pay off the solar that he purchased. He had an $11,000 bill from them with deferred interest for one year. The rate was 26% if he didn’t pay it off in a year. When he refinanced, he had an additional lien on his property for $19,000 in the form of a PACE assessment. So, collectively the solar cost him $30,000. This was for an 1800 sq ft home, no AC, no hot tub. His current electric bills were close to nothing. He will be dead before he recuperate the cost of the solar. My father is an old man, this should be senior abuse, I don’t know how they talked him into this. This should be criminal. SHAME ON COSTCO AND SUNRUN!!!!

We had a SunRun/Costco system installed three years ago and it was designed to produce 600 KWHfr per month and I was amazed that it performs on avg at 615KWHr/mo. We are net positive at true-up time & have been getting prox 100 refund per year.

We are very happy with all aspects of our service. Whatever you buy everything from one source otherwise you give away accountability. GregM Carlsbad Ca

SunRun can’t activate the solar system they installed. They tried yesterday with no success. Today, I can’t get them to return our phone calls (all go to voice mail) or emails.

So we are stuck paying for both our SCE electric bill and the solar loan, which is not affordable.

Worst company ever , horrible customer service . Blown circuit and inverter leading Back to solar system blew out half of my house and my main panel , back in November, it is now January 2020 and still has not been fixed , they ignore my phone calls and no one has reached out to me. Worst Company I have ever dealt with, worst decision and nightmare of my life. They should be sued and put out of business

Being as a 10 years Costco member the only one thing I regret to purchase is the solar panel from with Sunrun . Here are why :
    1. My meter was not read by the system for about whole month , and I didn’t notice that until my electrician installed my Tesla wall charger . So I called Sunrun Custmer service the next day they told me that it is not their responsibility to notify me the meter was not working correctly because my solar is purchased not leased from them , if it is leased they would keep an eye on it , I was like are you kidding me ? You guys installed the solar back in aug and now it is only earlier in Jan , the system has failed to working properly within half year ? And your company blamed this on me because I purchased it not leased it ?
    2. PleaSe go with some other better company like Tesla , just don’t go with Sunrun, you will regret it for real !
